It has been used on violins and other bowed instruments for centuries, predating and coexisting with oil varnish traditions. Spirit varnish produces a hard, brilliant finish that is thinner and faster-drying than oil varnish, making it well-suited to instrument finishing where minimal film thickness is desired. ## Process The varnish is prepared by dissolving selected resins in alcohol, often with the addition of shellac and sometimes essential oils (such as lavender or spike oil) that modify the working properties. The exact formulations are often closely guarded and vary widely among makers. Many historical recipes have been published, though their interpretation remains debated. Application is similar to shellac: thin coats are brushed or padded onto the prepared wood surface. Spirit varnish dries quickly—often within minutes—which demands efficient, confident brushwork. Each coat is lightly sanded or rubbed before the next. Color is traditionally built into the varnish itself using natural colorants such as alkanet root (red), dragon's blood (dark red), or gamboge (yellow).
