Steam BendingType: techniqueUsing steam to plasticize wood fibers, allowing guitar sides and other curved components to be bent into shape without cracking.## Overview Steam bending is a traditional woodworking technique used in lutherie to curve instrument sides (ribs) and other components into the required shapes. By exposing wood to steam at approximately 212°F (100°C), the lignin binding the wood fibers softens, allowing the wood to flex around forms without fracturing. This method is favored by some luthiers for its gentleness on the wood fibers compared to direct-heat methods. ## Process The luthier constructs or acquires a steam box—an enclosed chamber connected to a steam generator (often a wallpaper steamer or a kettle). The wood to be bent, typically 2-3mm thick side stock, is placed inside the steam box and exposed to steam for approximately one hour per inch of thickness. For typical guitar sides, 15-30 minutes is usually sufficient. Once adequately steamed, the wood is quickly removed and bent around a form or mold. Speed is essential, as the wood begins to cool and stiffen within minutes. The luthier uses the bending form along with clamps or straps to hold the wood in shape. A steel bending strap with an end block is often used on the outside of the bend to prevent the outer fibers from stretching and fracturing. The bent wood is left on the form until fully cooled and dried, typically overnight or longer.
