The pitch, sustain, and quality of this tapped sound reveal information about the plate's stiffness, mass, and damping characteristics. Tap-tone evaluation is one of the oldest and most intuitive methods of assessing tonewoods and voicing instrument plates. Experienced builders develop an ear for desirable tap tones and can predict with surprising accuracy how a plate will perform in a finished instrument. The fundamental tap tone of a soundboard plate drops in pitch as the plate is thinned and rises as bracing is added. The relationship between tap tones in different modes (across the grain versus along the grain) provides information about the plate's stiffness ratio and overall balance. ## In Practice Tap-tone evaluation is used at multiple stages of construction. A luthier first taps the raw wood billet to assess its potential, comparing the response of different pieces when selecting stock.
