Luthiers use this technique to guide the thicknessing and bracing of tops and backs, aiming for specific resonant frequencies that will produce a balanced, responsive instrument. The practice has roots in centuries of violin making and has been adapted for guitar construction. ## Process The luthier holds the plate loosely—typically between thumb and forefinger at a nodal point—and taps it with a fingertip or knuckle. The resulting tone reveals the plate's primary resonant frequency and its overtone content. By tapping at different locations, the luthier can assess how the vibration is distributed across the plate. For a guitar top, the luthier typically listens for the "main top" mode—the lowest fundamental resonance. This is compared against target frequencies that experience and research have shown to produce good results. Spruce tops for steel-string guitars commonly target a main top frequency in the range of 170-200 Hz before bracing. The plate is gradually thinned using planes, scrapers, or a drum sander, with frequent tap tests to monitor the changing pitch. As wood is removed, the pitch drops.
