It is the most acoustically important structural component, responsible for radiating the majority of the instrument's sound. The top receives vibration energy from the strings through the bridge and converts it into air-pressure waves that we perceive as sound. The wood species, thickness, bracing pattern, and finish of the top collectively determine more of the instrument's tonal character than all other components combined. Spruce in its various species (Sitka, Engelmann, Adirondack, European, Lutz) is the most common top wood for steel-string guitars. Western red cedar and redwood are alternatives that offer warmer, darker tonal qualities. The top must balance opposing requirements: it needs to be thin and light for acoustic responsiveness, yet strong and stable enough to withstand string tension indefinitely. ## In Practice Top wood selection is often the first and most consequential decision a builder makes for each instrument. Luthiers evaluate potential top sets by examining grain straightness and spacing, quartersawn orientation, weight, stiffness, and tap tone. A good top blank will feel light in the hand but stiff when flexed, and will produce a clear, sustained ring when tapped.
