Its primary purpose is to counteract the forward bowing force of string tension and allow the player or luthier to set the optimal amount of neck relief. Without a truss rod, a steel-string guitar neck would gradually bow forward under the constant pull of the strings, making the instrument unplayable. There are several truss rod designs. A single-action rod can only pull the neck backward (reduce relief); a dual-action or two-way rod can both push and pull, allowing adjustment in both directions. Vintage-style rods are simple compression rods, while modern designs often use a welded rod with a curved section that straightens when tightened. The adjustment nut is typically accessible either at the headstock or through the sound hole at the neck block end. ## In Practice Installing a truss rod is an early step in neck construction. A channel is routed into the neck blank, the rod is inserted, and the channel is sealed with a filler strip or the fingerboard itself. The rod must be installed straight and must fit without binding. Adjusting the truss rod is a routine part of guitar setup. The luthier turns the adjustment nut to increase or decrease tension, checking relief after each small adjustment.
