By adjusting the truss rod, the luthier controls the amount of neck relief—the slight concave curve in the neck that allows strings to vibrate freely without buzzing against the frets. Proper truss rod adjustment is the foundation of a good guitar setup and affects every other setup parameter. ## Process Before adjusting, the luthier assesses the current neck relief. With the guitar strung to pitch, a capo is placed on the first fret and a finger presses the low E string at the fret where the neck joins the body (typically the 14th fret on acoustics). The gap between the bottom of the string and the top of the frets at the midpoint of this span (typically the 7th or 8th fret) indicates the relief. A typical target is 0.008-0.012 inches (0.2-0.3mm), though preferences vary by player and style. If the neck has too much relief (too much bow), the truss rod is tightened—turned clockwise when viewed from the adjustment end—which straightens the neck.
