On guitars with angled headstocks, this junction is a structural weak point because the grain runs diagonally across the joint, making it prone to breakage from impacts. The volute adds extra wood mass at this critical area, significantly increasing the cross-sectional strength and reducing the risk of a headstock fracture. The volute can be a subtle, almost invisible thickening, or it can be a pronounced, decoratively shaped ridge. Some builders integrate the volute into the overall neck carve so that it flows naturally into the headstock profile, while others leave it as a distinct bump. Classical guitars traditionally have a more prominent volute that serves both structural and visual purposes. ## In Practice Carving a volute requires the neck blank to have sufficient wood at the headstock junction, which is easier to achieve with a one-piece neck than with a scarf-jointed design. The builder shapes the volute during the neck carving process, blending it smoothly into the neck profile and headstock face. A well-carved volute should feel comfortable to the fretting hand when playing in the first position and should not impede access to the nut area.
