The waist allows the guitar to rest comfortably on the player's thigh and contributes to the instrument's ergonomic feel. The depth of the waist curve varies significantly between body styles: a classical guitar has a deep, pronounced waist, while a dreadnought has a relatively shallow one. The waist dimension affects the internal air volume and the proportional distribution of the soundboard area between the upper and lower bouts. A tighter waist creates a more defined separation between the bass-producing lower bout and the treble-contributing upper bout. The waist is also the area of highest curvature on the sides, making it the most challenging section to bend. ## In Practice Bending the sides at the waist requires extra care because the tight radius can cause cracking or kinking if the wood is not properly prepared. The luthier applies more heat and moisture at the waist than at the gentler bout curves, often making multiple careful passes on the bending iron. Some builders use a specialized waist clamp or form to hold the bent shape while it cools and sets.
