Water-Based FinishType: techniqueModern low-toxicity finishes using water as the primary solvent, offering environmental and health advantages over solvent-based alternatives.## Overview Water-based finishes have become increasingly popular in lutherie as environmental regulations tighten and builders seek safer alternatives to solvent-based products. Modern water-based lacquers and polyurethanes have improved dramatically in recent years, offering clarity, durability, and workability that approach their solvent-based counterparts. They produce minimal volatile organic compounds (VOCs), have low odor, and do not require the explosion-proof spray equipment mandated for solvent-based finishes. ## Process Surface preparation is the same as for other finishes, with one important addition: water-based finishes raise the wood grain. To prevent this, many builders pre-raise the grain by misting the sanded surface with water, allowing it to dry, and sanding the raised fibers smooth. This is repeated two to three times until the grain no longer raises noticeably. Application is by spray (HVLP gun) or brush, depending on the product. Spray application generally produces better results for instrument work. The finish is thinned with water if needed, though many products are ready to spray as supplied. Coats are applied thinly and allowed to dry (typically 30-60 minutes between coats). Unlike nitrocellulose or shellac, water-based coats do not dissolve into each other, so inter-coat adhesion depends on mechanical bonding. Light sanding (320 grit) between coats is essential.
