Wax FinishType: techniqueA minimal protective coating using natural waxes like beeswax or carnauba, often used as a final topcoat over oil or as a standalone finish.## Overview Wax finishing applies a thin coat of natural or blended wax to the instrument surface, providing a soft, tactile finish with a gentle sheen. Beeswax, carnauba wax, and proprietary blends are the most common choices. Wax is the least protective of all finish types but is valued for its natural appearance, pleasant feel, and ease of application. It is most often used as a topcoat over an oil finish or as a maintenance polish over lacquer finishes. ## Process As a standalone finish, wax is applied to bare wood that has been sanded to at least 400 grit. The wax—either as a paste or dissolved in a solvent like turpentine—is rubbed onto the wood in thin, even coats using a soft cloth or fine steel wool (0000 grade). The wax is allowed to set briefly (5-15 minutes), then buffed vigorously with a clean, soft cloth. Buffing generates friction heat that melts and redistributes the wax, producing an even sheen. For a higher gloss, multiple coats are applied and buffed. When used over an oil finish, the wax is applied after the oil has fully cured (at least one week). The wax adds a protective sacrificial layer that can be renewed periodically. For maintenance over lacquer or shellac, a thin application of quality paste wax (such as Renaissance Wax or carnauba-based guitar polish) protects the finish from minor scratches and adds depth to the gloss.
