Despite its name, it is not a true cedar but belongs to the cypress family. The tree can reach heights of 60 meters and live well over a thousand years. The heartwood is a distinctive reddish-brown, darkening with age and exposure to light. Tonewood-grade cedar is typically quarter-sawn with tight, even grain and is significantly lighter and softer than spruce. ## Tonal Properties Western red cedar produces a warm, dark, and fundamentally rich tone that is noticeably different from any spruce. It is highly responsive to light touch, making it a natural partner for fingerstyle playing. Cedar tops feel "alive" and immediate, requiring less break-in time than spruce; many players note that a cedar-top guitar sounds mature from the very first day. The bass is warm and round, the midrange is lush, and the trebles have a sweetness that avoids harshness.
