X-BraceType: glossaryThe dominant bracing pattern for steel-string guitar tops, featuring two main braces crossing in an X below the sound hole.## Definition The X-brace is the most widely used soundboard bracing pattern for steel-string acoustic guitars, developed and popularized by C.F. Martin & Company in the mid-19th century. The pattern features two primary structural braces that cross each other in an X shape just below the sound hole. Smaller supporting braces, called tone bars and finger braces, radiate outward from the X intersection. This design provides an excellent balance of structural strength and acoustic freedom, handling the significant tension of steel strings while allowing the soundboard to vibrate efficiently. The angle of the X, its position relative to the sound hole, and the dimensions of the braces all affect the instrument's tonal character. Moving the X intersection further below the sound hole (a "forward-shifted X") generally increases bass response and volume, while a more traditional placement provides better balance and note definition. ## In Practice Building an X-braced top begins with carefully marking the brace positions on the underside of the soundboard. The two main X braces are typically cut from quartersawn spruce, shaped with a peaked or parabolic cross-section for optimal stiffness-to-weight ratio, and glued in place using a go-bar deck or clamps.
