The tree is moderate in size, typically reaching 10 to 20 meters in height. Ziricote's heartwood is its most remarkable feature: a dark brown to chocolate background laced with dramatic black grain lines that create swirling, spider-web or landscape-like patterns. The sapwood is a contrasting pale yellow-green, and the transition zone between heartwood and sapwood can display the most spectacular figuring, sometimes called "landscape" ziricote. The wood is dense and hard, with a fine, uniform texture and a natural luster. ## Tonal Properties Ziricote produces a tone that shares characteristics with both rosewood and maple. It delivers strong bass response and bright trebles reminiscent of rosewood, but with more midrange presence and warmth than Indian rosewood typically offers. The sound is full, balanced, and projecting, with good sustain and clear note separation. Some builders describe ziricote as having the depth of rosewood with added midrange complexity, filling in the typical rosewood scoop. It pairs well with spruce tops, producing a versatile voice suitable for both strumming and fingerpicking.
